What to watch out for
Coimbatore rewards preparation. These are the realities every intra-India relocator deserves to know before signing anything or forming firm expectations.
No metro, and none coming soon
Coimbatore has no metro, and the project was declined by the central government in November 2025 on population-threshold grounds. Plan daily life around two-wheelers, autos, app cabs and buses; the near-term hope is an improved bus or BRTS system, not rapid transit. Don't bank on a metro timeline.
Two IT Clusters, 7-8 km Apart
The CHIL/KGiSL SEZ at Saravanampatti (north) and TIDEL Park / Hanudev at Peelamedu (south) sit a cross-town drive apart. Confirm exactly which cluster your employer is in before you sign a lease, the new Avinashi Road flyover helps the Peelamedu and airport legs, but not the Saravanampatti spur on congested Sathy Road.
It's not a hill station
Coimbatore's "pleasant weather" reputation oversells it. The Palghat-Gap breeze is real and the evenings are lovely, but March-June days are hot (35-38°C), if dry. The actual cool air is up in the Nilgiris, a couple of hours away, not in the city itself.March-June days are hot (35-38°C)
The rain comes in October
Don't plan around the south-west monsoon. Coimbatore sits in a partial rain shadow and gets most of its rain from the north-east monsoon (Oct-Dec), peaking in October-November. Time school starts and your move around it, and keep an umbrella handy in those months.
Tamil runs daily life
Hindi has very low penetration here. English works in IT, corporate and healthcare, but autos, markets, utilities and school admin largely run in Tamil (the earthy Kongu dialect). Non-Tamil families should learn a few phrases and lean on CBSE/ICSE schools for curriculum continuity. Don't assume Hindi.
Get the Deposit & Registration Right
Two things get loosely called "registration" here, and Tamil Nadu treats them very differently. Filing the tenancy with the TN Rent Authority (tenancy.tn.gov.in) is mandatory for every lease, a low nominal fee, and due within 90 days, even on an 11-month deal; an unfiled agreement cannot be used as evidence before the Rent Tribunal. Registering the lease deed at the Sub-Registrar is optional and costs roughly 8% of the lease value in stamp duty, so if a tenant insists on it, that cost is expected to be tenant-borne, which is why most owners cap agreements at 11 months. Auto fares are union-set, not official
Drivers routinely quote above the union rate card, and Namma Yatri doesn't operate here, so don't assume your Bengaluru or Chennai app habits transfer. App cabs (Ola, Uber, Rapido, inDrive) are the transparent option; bike-taxis are cheapest for short hops.
Apartment water often means borewell
Despite the famously sweet Siruvani piped supply, many apartments depend on borewells and tankers. Ask about the building's water source and reliability before you sign, particularly heading into the dry March-June months. It's the single most-missed question by newcomers.
