How Coimbatore compares with other cities

Most people thinking about Coimbatore are weighing it against the bigger cities of the south. Here is a fair comparison on the things that matter for a move within India in 2026. Coimbatore offers value, an easy life and a serious industrial and healthcare base, but not the scale of a big metro.

02Settling In

Your first 30 days

Do these steps in this order. IKAN handles the ones with deadlines, so none of them is missed.

Your first 30 days

Six steps

1
within48 hours
Rental Agreement & Move-in
IKAN's property advisors arrange viewings within 48 hours of your arrival and negotiate the terms, expect to pay a six-month deposit, sign an 11-month lease, and agree a 5-10% renewal escalation every 11 months, with a fresh lease each cycle. We handle the mandatory TN Rent Authority filing (tenancy.tn.gov.in) within 90 days, and we coordinate the move-in date and any society NOC. Confirm the building's water source before you commit. Once your signed agreement and a local utility bill are in hand, update your Aadhaar address, online via the UIDAI self-service portal (myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in) or at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, since a current address underpins KYC for banking, gas and school admissions.
2
Indian SIM & Connectivity
If you don't already have an Indian SIM, register at any Jio or Airtel store, both offer eSIM. Keep your existing number active for OTPs and banking while you settle in, and add a local connection for everyday use and local services. If you would rather keep your existing number, use Mobile Number Portability, SMS PORT to 1900, collect the code it returns, and complete the switch at any Jio or Airtel store; the number keeps working nationwide even though it stays registered to its home circle.1900
3
Tamil Nadu Vehicle Re-registration
IKAN
If you're bringing a personal vehicle from another state, re-register with the Coimbatore RTO (TN-37 South, TN-38 North, TN-66 Central or TN-99 West) and pay road tax on the depreciated value. The NOC (Form 28) from your previous state's RTO is the prerequisite; new registration typically takes ~2-3 months. IKAN handles all RTO coordination.
4
School Admissions (if applicable)
For families with school-age children, Coimbatore's top CBSE and ICSE schools (Yuvabharathi, PSG Public, Stanes, DPS, PSBB Millennium) run 3-6 month waitlists. Begin applications before your move whenever possible, and verify each school's currently-operational grades for older children. IKAN recommends schools based on your corridor and curriculum preference. Get the Transfer Certificate (TC) from the current school, counter-attested where required, and confirm grade equivalence for any board change (for example state board to CBSE/ICSE) before the new academic year; these are the most common school-transfer hold-ups.
5
Utility & Broadband Setup
TNPDCL for electricity (auto-pay via the app). Confirm the building's water arrangement, CCMC piped (Siruvani/Pilloor) supply, plus borewell and tanker in many apartments. ACT Fibernet or Airtel for home broadband, 100-300 Mbps is standard in newer gated communities. Verify the existing infrastructure with the society manager. For cooking gas, transfer your existing LPG connection (Indane, HP or Bharat Gas) to a Coimbatore distributor or book a new one, piped natural gas is limited here, so cylinder LPG is the norm.

Build Your Local Network
Engage a maid / cook / driver as needed, IKAN's vendor network has providers used by other relocating families, and we can advise the current going monthly rates so you pay a fair local wage. For anyone working in your home, keep ID copies and arrange police verification of household staff through the local police station or the Tamil Nadu Police citizen portal. Identify your local kirana shop, vegetable vendor, dry-cleaner and chemist within walking distance, and get on your building's WhatsApp group on Day 1. Coimbatore's Kongu community is warm and welcoming once you make the first move.
Transport Setup
Coimbatore Mobility
Ola / Uber / Rapido / inDrive / Red Taxi · city & TNSTC buses · Coimbatore Junction rail · no metro. Many relocating families hire a driver for the first few months while learning the roads and two-wheeler etiquette.
Traffic Reality
Peak Hour Guide
Avinashi Road (now eased by the flyover), Gandhipuram and the Sathy Road stretch toward Saravanampatti clog around 9-10am and 6-8pm. Build your diary around these windows, and if you work in IT, live close to your cluster.

03Flights & Connections

The airport and flights

Coimbatore International Airport (CJB) is at Peelamedu, on the Avinashi Road IT corridor.

It is Tamil Nadu's second-busiest airport, and the new G.D. Naidu flyover now puts it under 15 minutes from the centre. It handles ~3.4 million passengers a year, with frequent domestic flights to every major metro and a handful of international routes. For a move within India, the domestic flights matter most, and Coimbatore Junction adds good train links.
